[HALFDAN "Swarti/the Black" ([830]-Rykinsvik [870], bur Ringerike, Ringarik, Hedmark and Vestfold). The Ynglinga Saga names Halfdan as son of Gudröd "the Hunter" and his second wife[35]. The Historia Norwegie names "Halfdanus…Niger" as son and successor of "Guthrodum Regem Venatorem", recording that he died after falling through the ice while travelling across a frozen lake "Rond"[36]. Snorre recounts that, after his father's death, his mother took Halfdan to Agder where he became king when aged eighteen, at which time he went to Vestfold and divided that kingdom with his half-brother Olaf[37]. He extended his domain to other parts of eastern Norway, probably also to the Sognefjord area on the west coast. He died, aged 40, after falling through the ice while riding over Rykinsvik bight. According to the Saga of Halfdan the Black, different districts claimed the honour of being Halfdan's burial place, and to satisfy all of them his body was divided into four parts and buried in Raumarik, Ringarik, Hedmark and Vestfold[38]. m firstly RAGNHILD, daughter of HARALD "Gullskiegg/Goldbeard" King at Sogn & his wife ---. Snorre records the marriage of Halfdan "the Black" and Ragnhild, daughter of Harald "Gulskeg" king at Sogn, as well as her death in the winter before her son died[39]. m secondly RAGNHILD, daughter of SIGURD "Hjort/the Stag" Helgasson King at Ringerike & his wife Thorny. Snorre records the second marriage of Halfdan "the Black" and Ragnhild, daughter of Sigurd "Hjort" king at Ringerike. He records that Ragnild's father was the son of Helge "Hvasse/the Sharp" and his wife Aslaug, daughter of Sigurd "the Worm-eyed" (son of Ragnar "Lodbrok"), and that her mother was the daughter of "Klakharald king in Jutland" and a sister of Thyre "Dannebod" who married the Danish king Gorm "the Old"[40]. A partir d'ici, nous entrons dans le domaine de la légende.

Gudrœd Halfdanson le Magnifique, son père, était roi du Vestfold. Il fut tué d'un coup d'épieu par un valet alors que Halfdan n'avait qu'un an. Ce meurtre avait été exécuté sur ordre de la reine Asa qui vengeait ainsi son propre père, le roi Harald Barberousse d'Agder, et son frère Gyrd, abattus par les guerriers de celui qui, après l'avoir enlevée, allait faire d'elle son épouse et la mère de Halfdan.

Asa emmena Halfdan dans le royaume d'Agder dont il devint roi à dix-huit ans. Au même moment, il partagea le Vesfold avec son demi-frère Olaf puis, les armes à la main, obligea un roi Gandalf à lui céder la moitié du Vingulmark qu'avait jadis possédé son père. Quant à Olaf, il ne tarda pas à mourir en laissant pour héritier un garçon nommé Rognvald.

Halfdan arracha le Raumarike au roi Sigtryg Eysteinsson de Hedmark au cours d'une bataille où son ennemi fut tué d'une flèche. Il dut encore vaincre plusieurs fois Eystein, frère de Sigtrygg, avant de pouvoir obtenir un traité qui lui donna aussi la moitié du Hedmark. Il conquit en plus le Toten, le Hadeland et la province de Land. Les fils du roi Gandalf tentèrent aussi de lui reprendre sa moitié du Vingulmark mais ce furent eux qui perdirent la leur.

Halfdan eut d'abord un fils de sa première épouse Ragnhild, fille du roi du Sogn Harald Barbe d'or qui désigna son petit-fils pour héritier. Au cours de la même année, Halfdan perdit beau-père, femme et fils mais reçut le Sogn en héritage de son enfant. Il confia la gestion de ce royaume au jarl des Gaular, son ami Atli le Mince. Halfdan se remaria avec une autre Ragnhild, fille de Sigurd le Cerf de Ringerike, qui lui donna Harald.
