Anecdote

GEBHARD [I], son of [--- & his wife Adelheid ---] (-1071 or after). According to Wegener[1475], he was the "Gebehardus comes" named in the charter dated 28 Nov 1043 in which "Heinricus…rex" granted property "quale domna Adalheit eiusque filius Gebehardus comes…in villis Wormerischa, Hegina, Fvrhenriet…in pago Nortgove et in comitatu Heinrici comitis" to "ministro nostro Pardoni"[1476]. Wegener assumes that Adelheid was the widow of Hermann IV Duke of Swabia. This appears tight chronologically. Duke Hermann married in [1035] and died in 1038. However, the son of Graf Gebhard [II] married after 1078, so is unlikely to have been born after [1055], when his father could have been no more than 18 years old if he had been the son of Duke Hermann. It is recognised that marriages frequently took place early, but this would require a succession of teenage bridegrooms which seems improbable. Wegener also cites the 14th century Kastler Reimchronik which names "Gebhard" as son of Ernst I Duke of Swabia[1477], but there appears to be nothing to link this person with the Graf von Sulzbach apart from his name. Graf von Sulzbach. "Gebehart comes de Sulzpach" witnessed the charter dated 1071 under which Kloster Banz was founded[1478]. m ---. According to Wegener, the wife of Gebhard Graf von Sulzbach was --- im Nordgau, daughter of Berenger Graf im Nordgau & his wife ---, and was maybe heiress of Sulzbach which she brought to her husband as dowry[1479]. The basis for this speculation is unclear, other than the transmission of the name Berengar into her husband's family. As Graf Berenger was presumably adult in 1007, as shown by charters in which he is named, it is likely that his children would have been born in [1000/20]. On the other hand, Graf Gebhard was probably born in [1030] which would mean he was considerably older than his wife if her origin is as Wegener suggests. Graf Gebhard [I] & his wife had [five] children
