He is named as son of Uhtred by Roger of Hoveden, first of the three sons he lists[417]. He succeeded his paternal uncle as Earl of Northumbria. Simeon of Durham records that Ealdred killed "the murderer Thurebrand" to avenge his father, made peace with "Carl the son of Thurebrand", but the latter killed "Aldred" in "the wood called Risewood"[418]. m ---.
